Shapan Dasguta, Janata’s Bharatiya Party candidate for the Tarakeshwar Assembly Constituency in West Bengal, has submitted his resignation letter to the Chairperson of Rajya Sabha Venkaiiah Naidu.
Officials from the Sabha’s Rajya secretariat told HT that they had received a Dasgupta letter. A senior BJP leader also confirmed that Dasgupta had resigned.
Dasgupta tweeted, “I have resigned from Rajya Sabha today to commit to yourself to fight for a better Bengal. I hope to file my nomination as a BJP candidate for Tarakaneshwar assembly chairs in the next few days.”
Someone who realized the details said, “He had time until March 19 to apply for his nomination letter to fight for the poll. If he did not resign from Rajya Sabha, he could face disqualification from the house.” The person said the resignation of Dasgupta submitted to the approval of the chair.
Dasgupta was nominated to Rajya Sabha by the President of India in April 2016. According to the 10th schedule related to the disqualification of parliamentarians, “a nominated home member will be disqualified because it becomes a member of a person’s house after it expires six months from the date where it takes place Sitnya after complying with the requirements of Article 99 or, as it should, article 188. ”
Article 99 and 188 of the Indian Constitution are related to the oath of parliamentary members.
Dasgupta, BJP candidate for Tarakeshwar seats in the Bengal Hotal district, faced the supervision of two opposition leaders after his name was announced as a candidate.
On Monday, the MP Trinamool Mahua Moitra has tweeted, “The Dasgupta Shapan is a BJP candidate for the WB poll. The 10th Constitutional Schedule said RS members were nominated for disqualified if he joined any political party after the expiration of 6 months since he swore Sworn in April 2016, remain unally. Must be disqualified now to join BJP. ”
Previously today, Congress MP, Jairam Ramesh raised the problem of nominating Dasgupta with the chair of Rajya Sabha M Venkaiiah Naidu. He tried to know whether Dasgupta had resigned.
The name of the Dasgupta on the Rajya Sabha website is listed in the nominated member category, unlike several other nominated parliamentarians such as Rakesh Sinha, Subramaniam Swami and Roopa Ganguly, after being nominated, in harmony with BJP.
Jairam Ramesh told HT that he personally met Naidu after sending a letter in Dasgupta. “The chairman told me that he had resigned.”
Shortly after the nomination on Sundays,
several party leaders who spoke with HT said they were not sure whether Dasgupta had taken party formal membership. A leader said he could become a member after being named as a candidate.
Even when Dasgupta did not join BJP formally, he continued to get along with the party. He was a member of the BJP delegation to the Election Commission and also met with President Pranab Mukherjee to seek an investigation of the death of BJP MLA from Hemtabad, Debnath Rai.
